CELEBRATIONS OF 300 YEARS OF MADRON SCHOOL AN 100 YEARS OF LANDITHY HALL

MADRON 2010
The School was founded in 1710 by a wealthy land owner George Daniel.
His will dated 10th of July 1705 endowed a free school for Madron.
He left £16 for the provision of a school master with a house for him to live in.  He provided a further sum to provide boots and bread for needy scholars.  He also left a special fund so that every scholar might receive a big saffron bun on Christmas Day.  The school was deliberately situated next to the then Parish Church of Penzance now the Parish Church of Madron alone.

ST. MADDERN’S SCHOOL

The Tricentenary celebrations took place starting on Sunday 27th June with a special informal service to celebrate local education.  The preacher was the Bishop of Truro The Rev. Tim Thornton.

Children from the school sang an African Song "We are Marching" with words in a native language.  The service ended with a bang - on the drums, as the children and some adults including our vicar Tim Hawkins,  took up various percussion instruments and marched around the church with a stirring and somewhat noisy march.  Great fun!

On Wednesday the archivist from Cornwall Record Office led a guided walk around the treasures of the church and churchyard.  This was deemed a great success by all who followed.

On Thursday There was a splendid exhibition of arranged flowers on the theme of  "Madron Daniel School 300 and counting".

Also an illustrated exhibition of pictures, drawings, maps and photographs was opened in Landithy Hall.  This covered 0ver 6,000 years of history in Madron which must be unique in still having tangible monuments covering this extensive time.
A continuous video ran of village events over the last 10 years.  Much fun was had recognising villagers who have since gone a just a little more grey.  Many old friends were re-united and swopped memories of past village life.

On Friday
a village party was held in the street.  A long set of tables stretched from one end to the other.
Young and old sat down together to a splendid spread of sandwiches and home made cakes. Orange squash, lemonade coffee and tea completed the feast.

On Saturday
The School Fete was held in the school field.
The weather was bright and sunny again and many stalls were spread around the field.  A splendid brass band created a happy atmosphere,  while visitors enjoyed hot beefburgers while looking out to Mounts Bay and St.Michaels Mount in the background.

HIGH TIME

We are now officially in summer time, even though you could be forgiven for not having noticed.  Thoughts of summer lead to horticultural pursuits and, if you wish to make the most of the fruits of your garden, you can do no finer than to dress your beds with mature dung.  Madron Young Farmers will provide the goods if you place an order for this, the best of manures, but time is of the essence.  You must make that telephone call now if you are to receive the dung which is available only during this coming weekend; Richard Roberts on Penzance 796924 will arrange delivery of the dung which will cost you a mere £5 for four bags plus £1 for any additional bags required.

THE BARN OWL TRUST
asks members of the public to report all sightings of these majestic birds;  anyone with relevant information should contact the Trust on 01364 653026.
