MADRON YOUTH CLUB
In addition to the Youth workers’ visits to the village on Mondays they also bring their activity vehicle to the village on Saturday afternoons with a multitude of outdoor activities on board.
The ice skating trip eventually took place during January when a group took a mini bus to the Eden Project on the last Friday evening of the month. After an exhausting session of 40 minutes on the ice rink, and hot drinking chocolate all round, the evening was rounded off with a sprint through the biomes to see as much as possible in the subdued light.
The Nintendo Wii is as popular with members of both youth groups as the other indoor games we are able to provide as well as craft including candle, cake, and card making but we look forward to using the outside area as the evenings draw out.
It is clear that two of our leaders of the older group, with increasing work commitments, will be unable to help us for very much longer. This will have serious implications for the group unless other adults, preferably of a younger generation than us, come forward.
If you would like to be involved with any of this work, there is a training course planned for those interested. The first session took place on February 4th and two of our leaders plus two older teenagers from Madron are attending weekly for about six weeks. This course can be repeated if there are enough people from the area wishing to take part.
THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING took place recently when, amongst the business discussed, comments were made that the street games and the visits by the mobile unit had been spasmodic. This means that the young generations of Madron cannot enjoy any degree of certainty that the promised activities will become a reality. It was agreed that enquiries would be made in the hope that this problem would be resolved.
It was very pleasing to hear that at least two young adults from the village have become involved in the training sessions which are being run for anyone who is interested in helping with youth work.
During the past year, of course some customers at the junior Youth Club have moved into the senior age bracket but there is a core of children in Madron who attend the Youth Club without fail. The activities include games, crafts and cooking, whilst one of the highlights of the junior night is the interval when the tables are laid and hot chocolate is served to everyone. Every session begins with the forming of a circle and the engaging of conversation and, at the conclusion, team games are always played.
Both the junior and the senior sections derive much pleasure from the use of the Wii which was purchased by the Youth Club with the aid of a grant.
Those in the senior section take part in similar activities, as well as the making of Christmas decorations, the creation of candles and involvement in other projects of an artistic nature. They take care of an allotment and they are always ready to participate in the Spring Show in Penzance.
Comment was made that whilst, initially, the children might not have been willing to take part in team projects, their time at the Youth Club has created in them a spirit of team work and their leaders were anxious to acknowledge the benefits of this development in young minds. As part of the tercentennial celebrations of the founding of the school at Madron, members of the Youth Club hope to clear completely the garden at the edge of Madron Green and to create a more ambitious scheme in horticulture.
The audited accounts were adopted and officers were elected as follows: Chairman: Jackie Meyers. Vice Chairman: Gill Burlton. Treasurer: Madge Christopher. Heartfelt gratitude was expressed to all leaders of the Youth Club, without whom there would be no such facility in the village to occupy the young people of Madron.
